Chasing Waves - Our Favourite Surf Spots In Bali

Bali has been perceived as the party island of Indonesia, where cheap drinks and cheap thrills await. To us, it’s all about the party waves, and if you can embrace the crowds, then every surf sesh here in the land of the lefts can be a celebration.

Uluwatu

Ulus is Bali’s most famous reef break. With jaw-dropping cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it attracts professional surfers from all around the world. The long lefts and consistent sets spread out along the coastline. The Peak breaks directly in front of the cave in Uluwatu and is highly recommended for advanced surfers only.  For beginners, the warungs on the cliffs are a picturesque spot to watch some pro surfers carve it up.

Padang Padang

With world-class waves, Padang Padang is the most popular place for getting barrelled. Its powerful left reef break offers speed and intensity for an epic session in the surf. Beginners and intermediate can get lucky here on a small swell on the right, but it’s best left to the experts on bigger days. It’s always crowded, so expect plenty of party waves.

Bingin

A cliff walk down to the crystal clear water that laps on the white sandy shore, it’s worth the trek down to Bingin for a picture perfect surf sesh. Another left-hander, this is a great spot to break into reef breaks if you’re used to surfing a sandy bank. It’s always busy in the water here, so paddle out with good vibes and you’re sure to have a good time.

Canggu

Situated on the southwest coast of Bali, Canggu has become increasingly popular among surfers and surf retreats in recent years. It offers a variety of breaks suitable for different skill levels, making it an ideal spot for beginners and intermediate surfers.

Echo Beach

A left hander with an occasional right, Echo Main Beach lies over a shallow reef right in front of the main restaurants. It’s a consistent break on a mid- tide. A nice tube to get barrelled in on Bali’s west coast.

Old Man’s

Just further south from Echo Beach, you’ll find Old Man's, which is a welcoming right point break for beginners and intermediate surfers, with long rides all the way to the next surf spot.

Berawa Beach

A little less crowded and a little less reef than the well-known surf breaks, Berawa is a break away from the busier line ups.

Before you book that cheap flight to Bali, some hot tips to remember:

If it’s your first time surfing in Bali, there’s some great surf groups and retreats run by locals who can take you out to all the best spots. Renting boards start from as little as five bucks for two hours and reduces the risk of damaging your own board during travel.

The reef is no joke, so if you’re a first-timer, it’s a good idea to have a first aid kit on hand or even wear booties during the first few surfs. Reef cuts and rashes might not ruin a whole holiday, but stepping on a sea urchin might be enough to keep you out of the water for a few days.

Yes, Bali is crowded both on land and in the water, so surf within your skill level, be courteous to those around you and chase the party waves for stoke all round.
