Travel Diaries: Tasmania Road Trip

Words and imagery by @shanbawden and @ria_ritchie

We packed our bags filled with a Billabong Winter wardrobe, knowing the ever-changing Tassie weather can be wild and drastic. Excited to explore the moody coastlines and mountains of the island, we hit the road for a week of adventures. It was nothing short of amazing - hiking untouched mountains, surfing ice cold waves and eating locally. We dived headfirst into the Tasmanian culture and explored as much of the wilderness this island state of Australia had to offer. Here’s what we got up to

Cradle Mountain
Highlights:
- Hiking Marion’s Lookout - overlooking the famous Dove Lake

- Sunrise over Dove Lake with the towering snowcapped Cradle Mountain as a backdrop

- Evening walk through Pencil Pine Falls spotting wombats

Eats:
- Hellyers Restaurant - We sampled some of the best local produce Tassie has to offer!

Stay:
- Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village - Our mountain cabin was incredible. Nestled amongst the Cradle Valley rainforest - pure seclusion.

Freycinet National Park
Highlights:
- Hiking to Wineglass Bay Beach

- Watching the sunset over Honeymoon Bay

- Exploring the nearby surf town of Bicheno

Eats:
Geographe Espresso Bar and Restaurant - Killer morning coffee and pizza by night

Richardsons Bistro - Views over the turquoise waters of Coles Bay and local seafood

Little Bay Patisserie - We had morning coffee and pastries here most mornings before a day of hiking and surfing!

Stay:
Walters Apartment Coles Bay - Cute beachy vibe Airbnb overlooking the surf

Tasman Peninsula

Highlights:
- Hiking to the pristine Cape Hauy

- Exploring the turquoise waters of Fortescue Bay

- Surfing at Pirates Bay

Eats:
- Cubed Espresso Bar - Roadside coffee van right next to our favourite wave in the area
- DooLishus Seafood Van - Local oysters and mussels on the beach!

Stay:
Stewarts Bay Lodge - We loved this spot, Timber cabins in the coastal bushland above Port Arthur

Hobart

Highlights:
- Surfing icy waters at South Arm

- Sunrise above Hobart at Mount Wellington

- Salamanca Markets

Town Eats:
- Room for a pony - Good vibes, coffee and breakfast

- Suzie Lucks - Epic spot for some modern Asian eats

- Jack Greene - Cosy burger bar, our go-to after a cold day surfing

Stay:
Travel Loge Hobart CBD - Sweet spot to stay right in the heart of Hobart, view of Mount Wellington from the room!
