A beach town called Mount Maunganui

Piki ana i te maunga karamatamata ko Mauao, e titiro whakararo ki nga wharenga waiwaia o te moana ko Tauranga moana.

Away from the hustle and bustle, nestled in the rugged coastline in New Zealand, lies the washed up beach town of Mount Maunganui. As dawn rises over Mauao, the crisp morning sets tone for the new day. We travelled here for Autumn to make the most of the golden sand stretches and earthy tones - emanating warmth and forging a sense of comfort and belonging.

We quickly realised the town is rich in culture with some of the best coastline in New Zealand. It is a sweet release from the busy city life, compelling you to slow down and as the saying is to “smell the roses”. The true beauty in this town was evident in the Native ToiToi that covered the dunes, and an abundance of protected wildlife, flora and fauna that adorned the coastline.

Locals from all walks of life welcome you with open arms, wanting and willing to show you the best the town has to offer. There is a deep appreciation for those who came before us, evident in the protection and pride of the Maori culture throughout the town.

The trip was full of special, local experiences. A sunset clamber up the cliffs of Moturiki Island, to jump off a secret spot known as the blow-hole, a moment in time upon reflection. A visit to the famous Arataki fish and chip shop and the chance to catchup with the locals at the well-known social spot Astrolabe, truly cemented our love for this small seaside town.
