Say Hello To Harmony

For those that don’t know you, tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Harmony! You can call me Harms :) I’m 23 and I live in Sydney, Australia. I love all things journaling, ocean, sunflowers, pilates, sunshine, family & friends. I’m a big home body and my ideal night would be a home cooked meal, watching a movie and in bed by 8pm (haha). I’m deeply passionate about spreading a message of value and freedom that encourages individuals (of all ages) to embrace and love themselves just as they are.

How long have you been surfing for, how did you get into it?
My dad taught me to surf from a very young age. From as long as I can remember I never wanted to be far from the ocean. It was (and still is!) my happy place. I did a few local surf comps growing up and that was so much fun. The joy it brought me definitely outweighed my skill but that didn’t bother me… it was something I loved and enjoyed. I don’t surf as much now but when I do, it reminds me why I love it.

Your favourite beach or wave in the world?
Maroubra beach. I grew up surfing there and I love it. It’s still my local beach and I’m not sure if that will ever change! It’ll always be home and it’ll always hold a special place in my heart.

What’s your ultimate travel bucket list destination you haven’t ticked off yet?
Oh my goodness I’d absolutely LOVE to go to the Maldives or bora bora. These two are at the very top of my list and it’s been there for a while now! Sunshine, ocean, good people… what more could you want!

You are a very positive and happy person, sharing a lot of quotes and inspiration on Instagram, what made you be this way?
Thank you that’s very kind. Journaling has been a part of my life since I was about 14 years old. It’s my safe space. I feel like I can fully let go, be myself and process what I’m holding in my mind and how I feel in my heart. Journalling has been so healing for me and this is the reason why I choose to share small snippets of it on social media… in the hopes that it may also help or inspire one other person going through a tough/confusing/unknown time. I’ve always been very positive! However, I still do have my bad days. And as much as I love being & feeling happy, that’s not always the case of how I feel on a day basis. And that’s OKAY. What’s important is how we learn to navigate those bad days and create room for joy to fill a space where sadness/anger/frustration/confusion/bitterness once was. I believe that we actually need bad days in order to be truly grateful for our good days. It puts everything into perspective. And I wouldn’t be who I am today and I wouldn’t have learnt what I have learnt (and still am learning) if it wasn’t for my bad days. So, I am grateful for them.

What are some of your daily practices that are a non negotiable for you?
I will journal every morning. Whether it’s 10 words or 10 pages. I will always put pen to paper when I first wake in the morning. It grounds me and it sets me up for my day. I do also love pilates but that is not something I do every single day. I like to listen to my body and move it in a way that feels good for it on that particular day. I am also trying to reduce my screen time. And actually completely cut out screen time in the morning! I’d like this to become a new daily non negotiable for me!

How do you stay active and fit and healthy with a career that is heavily focused on your physical appearance? And how do you balance this?
My mental and physical health is very important to me. I set very strong boundaries in my work and personal life to make sure that I am always taking care of my mind, soul and body. I am in an industry that is heavily focused on outward appearance. However, the reason why I decided to enter into the industry was because I really wanted to see change. I wanted individuals to be booked for a job because of who they were, not because of how they looked. So, from the beginning of my career I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t change myself (appearance and personality) in order to get a job. I see my health and my career as two seperate things. And any time my career starts to influence and interfere with my health (mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, social) I remind myself of my “why”.

Do I want to create healthy habits and look after my body because I want to FEEL a certain way or because I want to LOOK a certain way?
There is a big difference. My why is because I care for my body. I care for my mind. And I want to give them as much love and care and attention as they deserve. I feel free, strong, empowered, joyfilled and grounded when I prioritise my health. That is why it is important to me. Of course, it is normal to fall into the trap of feeling the pressure to conform to beauty standards in the modelling industry. To be honest, this pressure exists everywhere! Our society has created a system where you feel the need to conform to beauty standards and expectations!!

However, I try my best to rebel against this and remind myself that I don’t need to “look” a certain way or change myself for my job (or for anything & anyone!). I believe being yourself, in any job you find yourself in, is what will set you free and allow you to shine. Something I always like to remind myself of is that the greatness of our life’s existence does not depend on how we look. I am grateful to have agents who understand this and who really respect my values. I don’t do my job to focus on my looks. I do my job to empower change. And to empower individuals to love themselves exactly as they are. I am also so grateful to be able to work with brands like Billabong who work hard to implement this change. Every time I have worked with Billabong I have felt so empowered. They have created such a safe and uplifting space where I feel like I can show up and be 100% myself. They value me as a person. The environment on set makes me feel confident in WHO I am. And, in a world that focuses so heavily on looks, I felt that they placed more value on what was on the inside. And that is very special.

Who is someone that inspires you to be a better person?
Oh my goodness. So many people. My mum. She’s relentless when it comes to empowering women and I truly believe that her passions in this area have helped to form my own similar passions. She’s taught me so much about my own worth through the way she lives. I am continually inspired by her. My husband. I wouldn’t be who I am today without him. He inspires me to be a better person every single day. He holds so many characteristics that I admire about a person. He’s humble, selfless and kind yet dedicated, disciplined and steadfast. Another person would be Morgan Harper Nichols. She’s an author and I absolutely love following her on Instagram. Her words are healing and encouraging and I am so inspired by her writing and the woman she is.

What’s on your playlist right now? And what things motivate you to have a productive day?
Doing something in the morning that fills my heart with joy, like an ocean swim or having a coffee and journaling helps to ground me, refreshes my mind and sets a beautiful tone for my day. I find my productive days start when I prioritise my mental health and do things that make my soul happy! I am loving listening to Jack Johnson and Norah Jones at the moment :)
