Snow Diaries : Adventures in the Canadian Backcountry with Maddie Mastro and Bekah Ashley

Words by Bekah Ashley

I think it’s safe to say for a lot of us, snowboarding in British Columbia is on the bucket list. It wasn’t until this past spring, when a couple folks at Billabong reached out to me, that I got to see what the excitement was all about.

I left Salt Lake City in late March and convened with the rest of the crew in Whistler. We did a bit of exploring while waiting on some lost luggage, then caravanned to Bralorne – a deserted mining town of about 70 people, four hours north of Whistler. Driving north to Bralorne on a windy, narrow dirt road we made stops in Joffre Lakes National Park and detoured to an incredible glacier pool called Seton Lake. Taking our time, we got to Bralorne late that night happy, jetlagged, and fired up for the week ahead.

From the outside, Bralorne is just some old mine shacks and deserted buildings. But we quickly learned that it’s also home to some pretty incredible terrain. Over the next week, we spent long days in the backcountry, breathing in BC’s fresh mountain air and taking in the iconic landscape. While we didn’t get the spring storm we’d hoped for, to have access to this kind of terrain was humbling and eye-opening. We got a handful of bluebird days in, with no shortage of dreamy spring carves and fun times with the crew. Since we flew back home, I’ve missed this rugged landscape and our adventures here a lot. Read through my trip diary below with photos from both Maddie and myself.
